Description: Heavenly Bamboo, is completely unrelated to Bamboo. It’s common name comes only from it’s resemblance to bamboo due to the fine lacy foliage, and the growth pattern of the plant, which is cane like.
USDA Zone: USDA: 4b to 11
Height: 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 meters)
Spacing: 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters)
Mature Form: Upright
Growth Rate: Medium
Foliage Color: Evergreen. Blue-green foliage is tinged red in winter, especially in full sun. Large clusters of red berries are attractive in fall and winter.
Bloom Color: White/Near White
Bloom Time: Late Spring/Early Summer
Sun Exposure: Sun to shade, light shade is best in Arizona
Origin: China, Japan, Mongolia and other Eastern Asian Landmasses
Growth Habits: Evergreen shrub, growing slowly to 4 to 8 feet tall (1.2 to 2.4 meters), 2 to 4 feet wide (0.6 to 1.2 meters); alternate, bi or tri-pinnate compound leaves, turning orange or red in the fall, elliptic to lanceolate leaflets
Soil pH: 3.7 to 6.4
Watering Needs: Does better with regular water, tolerates some drought, prefer a slightly alkaline soil
Problems: No serious insect or disease pests.
Cultural Practices: Fertilize in spring. Cut old canes to the ground. The Nandinas tend to become chlorotic in alkaline soils and need regular treatment with iron chelate.
Blooming Habits: Large panicle of small white flowers in late spring. Berries in early fall, 0.25 inch in diameter (6 millimeters), bright red at first, then turning black and persisting through winter.
Discussion: The plant is popular for three reasons. First of all, the foliage is bamboo-like, with arching canes and finely cut lacy leaves. Then there are the flowers–spikes of pinkish buds that open to white on sprays about 1 foot long in mid-summer. Next come the berries: Bright red, and held above the foliage, just in time for Christmas decorations in most areas. In fact, Heavenly Bamboo is more showy that most hollies because the berries are not hidden by foliage. Prune your Heavenly Bamboo carefully, as canes do not branch out and it’s best to thin out old stems every year or head back old canes at varying lengths to produce a dense plant. Once established, they are very tough plants, thriving in sun, shade, moist or dry conditions.
