Deciduous trees Characteristics

Deciduous trees have best been described as the trees that shed seasonally so that they can adapt to the climatic changes. They are very ornamental plants, adding so much color to a landscape, especially when they appear in clusters. Deciduous trees have a variety of uses in today’s world, with the most obvious being their aesthetic value. They are also used for secondary purposes like wind protection and more commonly as a source of timber as most of them are hardwoods.

Most deciduous trees usually flower during late fall and in the winter when they have shed almost all their leaves. Since most of them depend on wind as an agent of dispersal, the absence of leaves makes this possible and much more convenient as pollen exchange is easier that way. There is no perfection in the process as there are some complexities that may be involved like destruction of the flowers by extreme cold.

It’s been established that deciduous trees often shed. But right before they do, in the beginning of autumn, or fall, the leaves of the trees turn from green to a more attractive color that ranges anywhere from bright yellow to crimson. It’s hard to put the exact beauty that a collection of deciduous trees display during this season, but it’s simply a sight for sore eyes. Its one of the great aesthetic gifts of nature, especially in a landscape that is invaded by may deciduous trees like maples and oaks.

During the dry seasons, or the cold ones, there is the possibility of there being a shortage of food. To cope with this, deciduous plants usually take in all the carbon and nitrogen from the leaves just before they are shed. They also have the ability of taking in a lot of water from the soil, and storing it away for when the supply is lesser. Deciduous trees have long life, some going for more than a century, suffering little effects of time. They also have some of the fastest growth rates in comparison to other varieties of trees. There is one species in precision, the weeping willow which can grow an easy 10ft within a year. Deciduous trees usually have different leaf characteristics. They may have simple or compound leaves which is basically what is used to subdivide them.

These are the basic characteristics that surround deciduous trees, though the list is usually longer, taking into account the reproduction details among others.
