Evergreen trees are usually a natural choice when it comes to landscaping. These trees have the ‘it’ factor that one usually looks for when it comes to bringing aesthetic appeal to a landscape. There are several varieties of evergreens to choose from, and the only limitation is the kind of tree in precision you are looking for.
Evergreens are desired for a variety of reasons. One of them is because of their evergreen characteristic. During the cold winter months, when all other green plants and shrubs are letting go of their leaves, evergreen trees maintain the greenery until the very last day of the season. They are great in bringing some color to a backyard when everything else is covered in snow.
Evergreen trees mature relatively fast compared to other tree species. They grow at a rapid rate and usually reach a height of 80 ft within a short couple of years. Because of this characteristic, they are used heavily when it comes to wind breaking. Their sheer height makes them perfect for stopping wind which could cause devastating effects to weaker plants when left to blow.
These trees are drought resistant. They can withstand the hot and dry summer months without loosing their green or drying out. But it cannot be dry all year round. Desert like conditions do not favor their survival since they need a regular supply of water especially in the initial stages when they start to grow. Dry spells that last a couple of months don’t mean disaster for evergreens. That is probably because of the shape of the leaves which are narrow and without a huge surface area. This precise trait makes them good at conserving water as little of it is lost via transpiration.
Evergreen trees do continually shed their leaves, just like the other varieties of trees. The only difference is, they continually get replaced, even when the climatic conditions don’t approve. It’s because of this characteristic that they don’t loose their greenery in fall or in the winter.
When growing evergreen trees, it would be best to start them off in the nursery bed as seedlings. Provision of the necessary conditions is vital in ensuring their survival. Otherwise, starting off with the seeds can be a bit troublesome especially when you have not grown them in the past. They flourish well after great care in their first few fragile weeks of life, both in the nursery and out in the field.
