Tree Care for Winter

Many people are anticipating winter because of the cold and comfortable climate that lasts for quite a long time. This is the season that they can cuddle in front of a fireplace sipping a hot cup of chocolate to make them warm and cozy. But it is not just humans who need care during this season. Animals and plants also have their special needs when winter falls. At the same time, even the sturdiest living thing on Earth like the trees require proper maintenance and the right tree care in order to survive. As the owner, it is your responsibility to know what are the ways to take care of the trees when the temperature is low.

One of the major problems among trees during this season is frost cracking. This happens if there is a sudden change of temperature in your area. More often than not, tree owners do nothing about this dilemma since trees can repair itself after the winter is over. However, once your tree already has frost cracks, it is already vulnerable to pests, diseases, and other tree health problems. Today, you have the option to give your plant a blanket that is specially made for trees. This tree blanket would help you prevent your trees from being damaged due to sudden change in temperature. Aside from that, the tree blanket would also aid the tree in reducing the loss of moisture during the winter. If you have palm tree or tropical trees, you can wrap the bark of the trees during this season.

Late growth is another problem among trees during the cold season. If this happens, your tree would not be prepared for the winter. It would not have enough nutrients that would keep it healthy during the cold season and it would eventually die before winter ends. In order to avoid late growth among your trees, you should not prune it before the fall. If you would prune your trees before winter, it would only encourage new tree growth which can be at risk for frost damage. Other than that, you must not also use fertilizers that can quickly release Nitrogen in the tree. Although fertilizing trees during the fall may help it to become healthier when winter comes, you must also be aware of the components that you must avoid.

Dry skin is one of the major dilemmas of humans when winter comes. The same goes for the trees. They also experience moisture loss which results to the so-called winter drought. Unfortunately, you can’t do much about this winter problem. However, if you want to slow down the moisture loss on your trees, you can actually create a mulch around the tree base at least few weeks before the winter. This mulch must be made from organic substances so that the roots will have a temperature buffer during the season.

You must also prune the weak branches that are prone to breakage when winter comes. Not only that it will help your tree, it will also be a safety measure for everyone at the same time.
