Water Gardening

Water being one of most versatile and adaptable features that can enhance a garden, offers you a great opportunity to grow a wide variety of interesting and colorful plants, but to have running water which makes your garden come alive with movement and sound is the most rewarding.
You don’t need to have a large garden to enjoy a water garden even the smallest patio will do to create a miniature waterscape. There are a variety of water features you can introduce even indoors to create that exotic tropical touch.

With the inexpensive materials that are available today and your imaginative designing a lot can be achieved to create the garden of your dreams. There are preformed pond units but these can be limiting and expensive. With the use of pond liners on the other hand, any configuration can be created and is ideal for a beginner, providing unlimited scope of imaginative design. Concrete can also be used but this is recommended only for those who are experienced or able to handle concrete. A beginner will do well to handle simpler shapes to avoid leaks which are the draw backs in concrete.

If you plan to install moving water features, remember that those are powered by pumps. They are available from garden centers and come with complete instructions on how to install. They also tell you how much water it will move and are ideal in creating waterfalls, streams, fountains and water spouts.

Once you have set up the water feature you will be enthusiastic to plant it up and maybe add some colorful fish as well. Selecting plants to go into the pond and surrounding areas is the exiting part of a water garden. If your water feature has shallow and marshy areas, remember to pick up some marginal and bog plants. Water lilies are very popular and their flowers come in a variety of colors. There are also many deep-water aquatics that are attractive and ideal for growing inside the pond.

A natural extension to your water garden is the addition of fish. Japanese Koi carp are always very fascinating but they can be quite expensive. But there are much more affordable and colorful fish and a visit to your local aquarium will no doubt be quite rewarding.

These man made features add to nature conservation and play a major role. The ecosystem with time will become more established and will encourage wild life to visit, and the plants will blend into each other well, but do remember that all water features like in all gardening features need to be well looked after to have the effect you wanted when you first created it.

Water gardening can be a very rewarding and an interesting pastime that will bring an immense amount of pleasure to both the creator and the visitor. It is a hobby that is well within the capabilities of the amateur and the professional alike in creating and maintaining interesting and attractive features of streams, pools, fountains, water spouts or water falls.
